Feel Good Powertone Pilates Studio

Introduction

The Powertone Pilates System by Shapemaster offers a power assisted workout to improve Posture and Alignment also increase Mobility and lengthen the Spine, safely and effectively Toning Muscles and improving Flexibility.

The Spine is a complex structure with intertwining nerves and cartilage which deteriorates with age, therefore mobilising the spine and strengthening the muscular structure which supports the spine safely will ease pain and lengthen the back therefore reducing tension. The Spine extends from the base of the skull to the base of the pelvis; to keep the spine functioning at an optimum level we need to perform exercises which incorporate flexion, extension, lateral flexion and rotation. The Powertone Pilates System performs all of these movements safely, balancing the whole body, including the weak muscles we neglect, whilst improving Posture and Breath.

History of Pilates

Originally called Contrology & only named Pilates after his death the Pilates method of exercise was developed by Joseph Hubertus Pilates in the late 1880’s in Germany. Joseph was a frail and unhealthy child, but through his study of anatomy & movement he managed to cure himself of his ailments by developing a specialized technique of muscle control and movement to increase circulation and cardiovascular strength and to rid the body of toxins & by ages 14; now a healthy specimen; he was competing as an athlete in a number of sporting disciplines. Joseph moved to England to pursue professional boxing just before World War 1 broke out & being a native German was put into an Internment Camp in 1918. In the work camp he helped fellow inmates with his exercise techniques, modifying beds using springs, pulleys & straps & thus this was the humble beginnings of the Pilates reformer we know today. Interestingly the inmates who were following his exercise regime were the only ones to survive an epidemic of influenza within the camp. In the mid 1920’s Joseph Pilates moved to New York City & opened his first Pilates Studio in 1926 on 8th Avenue.

Pilates is a unique combination of stretching and strengthening, conditioning the body, yet you are not left tired and sore. A mind-body exercise method; Pilates makes one focus inwards, feeling our muscles and breath whilst skillfully developing them. Pilates can be enjoyed by all as a low impact workout enhancing physical strength, flexibility, balance and mental well-being. Originally intended for rehabilitation, it has evolved into a widely practiced fitness regime.

Classical Pilates today is strictly based on the original movements designed by Joseph Hubertus Pilates.

Contemporary Pilates has evolved from Classical Pilates.

We practice Contemporary Pilates. Its creation has been heavily influenced by physical therapy to add modifications & variations to exercises, because, with time, modern scientific research has developed and more has been learnt about the Pilates movements and their effect on the body. Our Feel Good Studio Stott Pilates V2 max Reformers were developed & approved for medical use throughout Europe.

Stott Pilates with Susie can be performed on our new V2 Max Reformers with Vertical Frames, on the Mat, on our Split pedal Stability Chairs, or on our Stability Balls according to your needs.

Susie will guide you through controlled movements to target specific muscle groups with precision and breath work, aiming to create a balanced body, a strong core, improved posture, enhanced stability & support from injury recovery.

Athletes may incorporate Pilates to boost performance by enhancing coordination, agility, strength and flexibility to reduce risk of injury.

Pilates creates a connection between mind and body, promoting mindfulness and mental clarity.

Susie will examine your posture & work to correct by strengthening & stretching muscles responsible for proper alignment and focusing on controlled movements to improve balance and stability.

Regular Pilates exercise under her guidance will enhance muscular endurance and flexibility, contributing to your overall physical fitness and targeting and improving the strength of your core muscles including abdominals, back extensors and pelvic floor.

History of Shapemaster Powertone Pilates

Toning tables began back in the 1930’s when Bernard H Stauffer began to work on a technique he called Induced Rhythmic Motion (IRM). Originally devised to help Polio sufferers maintain muscle mass lost through inactivity, it was soon recognised muscle mass improved along with better circulation, improved strength & agility.

Today as our understanding of the human body has developed so then must our approach to exercise. Both Stott Pilates Reformers & equipment & Shapemaster Pilates Toning Tables have worked closely with doctors & physiotherapists to ensure we have a range of equipment biomechanically matched to our bodies requirements. Thus providing the best all round balanced workout to achieve core strength & improved posture available today.

Shapemaster are recognised as the best manufacturer of Power Assisted Exercise machines. Ever since the introduction of their innovative range of toning tables in the late 1980’s their pioneering spirit has led them to rediscover and refine an alternative way to exercise than the high impact, percussive and all too joint stressing routines that are found in the traditional gym environment. Shapemaster Toning Beds control the speed and movement isolating the muscles for perfect and safe training, keeping your spine in perfect alignment. Besides continuing with research and development programs in major University’s in the U.K.  Each and every machine that Shapemaster produce is hand built to exacting standards and is exported today to every corner of the globe. Shapemaster’s vision to allow everybody the opportunity to exercise has led to some unique engineering solutions. Exercise solutions have been devised and supplied to individuals who have suffered spinal and nerve injuries at brain and spinal injury clinics, cardiac rehabilitation centres, Multiple Sclerosis centres, Senior Care Homes, Physiotherapists and rehabilitations hospitals and Feel Good Studios around the world. Our Powertone Pilates method has attracted young mothers, executives and health conscious people alike, as well as for rehabilitation and injured sports people, plus encouraging clients who wish to achieve weight loss and pain relief and for all ages who wish to stretch and relax as they improve balance, posture, tone and mobility whilst reducing stress.

The Machines

Hipster

This Hipster is a versatile machine which can be used both prone (face down) or supine (face up) to tone and firm the hips, buttocks, lower back and legs and mobilise the hips. Both positions engage the main core stabilisers; the pelvic floor muscles, transverses abdominis and multifidus. Activating these muscles is important to build a strong core. Strengthening these muscles will protect the back from injury.

This machine will also condition the Iliopsoas muscle which is the primary hip flexor. This muscle connects the spine to the legs and influences pelvic alignment & is crucial for walking, running. Stabilising & balancing this muscle stabilises the hip & back thereby reducing tension in both.

Flys and Thighs

This machine will shape your legs, arms, shoulders and back while improving hip mobility.
Co-ordinates upper and lower body; alternately training inner thighs with chest and arms then outer thighs and hips with back and shoulders.
The Flys and Thighs helps improve mobility of the hips and increases muscle strength in the pectorals and posterior deltoids.
Desk workers often have shortened pectoral fibers causing the shoulders to be pulled and rounded forward. This machine both strengthens and stretches the pectorals ensuring balance is maintained in the chest region.
The lower body engages the abductors and adductors; important in stabilising the hips and knees in standing, running and walking. These muscles often become imbalanced but the Powertone Pilates System will strengthen them equally.

Tummy Crunch

A multifunctional machine that will increase strength in the abdominals and lower back, stretch the glutes, whilst also mobilising the hips and knees.
The Rectus Abdominis contracts during the controlled sit up motion, whilst the knees to chest action stimulates the lower fibres of the abdominal muscles.
With this machine in perfect form you can control your breathing and contract your core…5 minutes gives you 75 perfect sit ups leading to a firmer and flatter appearance to this often problematic area.
A torso extension follows the sit up; strengthening the back extensors, thereby preventing/reducing back pain.
This machine also has the versatility to adapt to mobilsing the hips and knees and stretching the buttocks and deep rotators of the hips; reducing tension in the (S.I) Sacro-illiac joint and (I.T) Illio-tibial band. The leg press movement defines the thighs, working the glutes hamstrings and quadriceps; encouraging shapelier upper legs and buttocks

Posture Pullover

The Posture Pullover action firms and strengthens the chest, upper back, shoulders, triceps and waistline.
The result is improved posture and upper back mobility.
The moving pad gently lifts the ribcage, helping the chest to expand. This improves breathing and the lungs oxygenate more fully, therefore improving lung function.
The machine guides your arms overhead and we will teach you how and when to concentrate on engaging your pelvic floor and core muscles.
Your ribcage will be encouraged to expand and stretch as the moving pad gently rocks beneath the thoracic spine. As we age, the muscles in between the ribs (intercostals) become tight; causing the diaphragm to overwork because of the lack of movement in the ribs. This machine encourages our ribs to remain supple so we will not fatigue so easily!

Bums & Tums

The unique movement of this machine helps to strengthen and tone the stomach and hips whilst firm and lift the buttocks whilst you enjoy the gentle massaging action. This can also help to reduce sciatic and back pain. The results after using this machine for 6 weeks will be shapelier buttocks. This can also improve your gait pattern as this muscle is the main extensor of the hip, giving you a limber lumbar!

Waist Away

The Waist Away is a superb exercise for the oblique muscles. Creating a narrow waistline, whilst flattening the abdominal wall, whilst simultaneously adding strength and flexibility to the lower back and reducing back pain.
The internal and external obliques are diagonal muscles which lie underneath the Rectus Abdominus. These muscles are responsible for side bending & twisting actions.
The erector spinae muscles are also involved thus strengthening the lower back.
This unique exercise combination will provide fast results creating a slim waist and firm flat abdominals.
This machine will gently rock you side to side as a reward for completing your circuit!
